Hi Reader, This week has brought lots of heat to Southern California-- and unusual humidity! I know that the weather throughout the world is a bit topsy-turvy right now, and I hope that you and your families are all doing ok. This week's issue of Dollars & Cents has the following in store:
How to Talk to Your Family About MoneyDuring last week's Q&A, we briefly discussed that talking about money feels challenging for many of us. I've been thinking about it ever since, and wanted to take a deeper dive into the reasons why, and give you some tips and strategies to make it easier. The Iron Triangle PrincipleThere is a project management principle called the Iron Triangle that I like to reference when making adjustments to my budget. You may have heard of this along the lines of "You can only have two of three things". When I need to make adjustments to either cost, time, or scope in my budget, this principle helps me be more aware that I will likely need to add additional work on one of the other two pillars. For example, if I planned to reduce my food costs, I can expect to make adjustments to my time and scope. I can plan to spend more time cooking at home or shopping a few grocery stores for the best deals, and my scope may be impacted because I will choose recipes with less ingredients. Working with yesterday's Super Full Moon in AquariusOn August 1st, we experienced a Super Full Moon in the sign of Aquarius. This card from Yasmin Boland's Moonology Manifestation deck reminds us to "Be Real" at this time. When it comes to your budget and finances, is there a particular area that you need to be more real about? Remember that budgeting is a way of setting boundaries. If you've had a lot of fun this summer (or winter in the Southern Hemisphere), be realistic that it may be time to slow down a bit. The affirmation for this card is one I'm going to keep top of mind this week: "The truth empowers me and sets me free!"
